Nikos Kokolakis

​Nikos Kokolakis (1981) (GR) is a composer and sound artist living in Den Haag, NL.

He studied Physics at the University of Crete and Music Composition at the Ionian University in Corfu. He obtained the MA in Composition at The Royal Conservatoire in The Hague with Peter Adriaansz, Yannis Kyriakides and Raviv Ganchrow.

He is one of the founding members and artistic leader of Catchpenny Ensemble since 2015. He is engaged in multidisciplinary artistic approaches and is an active member of various artists’ initiatives, with a special focus on collective creation. His compositional approach is conceptual and his compositions are materialized with a strong emphasis on structures and patterns, drawing inspiration from spatial concepts.

His works have been performed in various venues and festivals including Gaudeamus Muziekweek, Manifesta 12, Dag in de Branding, Orgelpark Amsterdam, St. Bavo Organ Haarlem, Muziekgebouw Frits Philips Eindhoven, Muziekcentrum De Bijloke, Montalvo Arts Center etc by ensembles such as New European Ensemble, Slagwerk Den Haag, Ives Ensemble and Catchpenny Ensemble among others.

Stream for Marimba (2016) won the first prize in the Composition Concours within the TROMP international percussion competition performed by Jonathan Bonny. In 2015 he won the second prize in the International Carillon Composition Contest in Zwolle for his piece Squarcle for Carillon, and in 2017 his work Bagatelles for Carillon was selected to be performed by Gijsbert Kok for the 100th anniversary of the Dutch Carillon Society.
